My rating: 3 of 5 stars
(Vague spoiler alert if you don’t know the story)
Steinbeck’s skill as a storyteller makes it all the more wrenching. One of the most poignant things is the story within the story: the narrative (almost a liturgy, if that doesn’t sound too pretentious) that George and Lennie use to get them through life.
The hopelessness of the book is why I gave it only three stars.
