This was the third of Tolkien’s works that my wife and I read aloud together, the others being The Lord of the Rings and The Simarillion. Of course, it was lots of fun for me to read The Hobbit again for the first time since childhood.
One thing that jumped out at us was how different the writing style is from The Lord of the Rings, since The Hobbit is a children’s story and The Lord of the Rings is styled more like a medieval epic. Tolkien once compares Bilbo’s shriek to a train, and one of the dwarves worries about being kicked like a football by giants. Those comparisons wouldn’t have made it into The Lord of the Rings. The elves and trolls are also more comical than in his other works.
It was great to revisit this book, and we look forward to reading it to our kids.
